Aizu Wakamatsu: A Samurai Side Trip from Tokyo

Aizu Wakamatsu: A Samurai Side Trip from Tokyo

Description

Just a few hours from Tokyo via shinkansen, Aizu Wakamatsu offers a fascinating step back into Japan’s feudal past — without the crowds.

This historic castle town in Fukushima Prefecture was once home to the region’s samurai clans, and its dramatic history is still woven into its streets today. Visit the striking Tsuruga Castle, explore the story of the young Byakkotai warriors, and wander the beautifully preserved Edo-period village of Ouchi-juku nearby. Add in soothing hot springs, excellent local sake, and a slower pace than Japan’s major cities, and Aizu Wakamatsu makes for a rewarding and easily accessible detour for travellers wanting to experience a lesser-known side of Japan.
