Itinerary

Day1: Chitose
Arrive at New Chitose (Sapporo) Airport.

You will be met by a tour representative and helped to board a shuttle bus to Sounkyo. (Departure time depends on the season.)

Day2: Sounkyo – Abashiri

Ginga & Ryusei Waterfall (15 min): Sounkyo Gorge is situated at the foot of Mt. Daisetsu-zan, which is called the “roof of Hokkaido.” The giant gorge, bordered by 100-meter-high cliffs formed by the erosion of tuff, stretches for 24 kilometers and forms the center of Daisetsu-zan National Park.The gorge contains lots of waterfalls, of which the Ryusei Falls (shooting star falls) and Ginga Falls (Milky Way falls) are especially worth seeing. At both of these waterfalls, the water falls directly over the cliff, giving them a sense of great power.

Fox Farm (30 min):(admission must be paid directly and is not included in tour price) Fox farm, where the ‘kita-kitsune’ (northern fox), one of Hokkaido’s most famous animals, is bred. The rare silver fox can be seen there

  • Abashiri Prison Museum:(admission must be paid directly and is not included in tour price) A real cell used at Abashiri Prison until 1984 has been relocated in its entirety and opened as a museum, showing you an exact reproduction of the grim life of the prisoners in this five-room, one-story wooden building.
  • Okhotsk Drift Ice Museum: (admission must be paid directly and is not included in tour price) Part of the Mount Tento Observatory, you can see exhibitions of real drift ice all year round in the -15゚C drift ice room or the 3D super wide high-vision theatre.
  • Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples (Depend on the season): (admission must be paid directly and is not included in tour price) This museum focuses on the Native Peoples of the North who live in both Eurasia and America.

Day3: Shiretoko or Abashiri – Mashu – Akan

Shiretoko Cruise – 90 minute scenic cruise with views of:(admission must be paid directly and is not included in tour price)

  • Oronko Rock: Mountain rock where the legendary fierce battle between Orokko family and Ainu once took place. Today, it is now an observatory allowing you to see 360 degree view of the Okhotsk.
  • Yuhi-dai (Evening Sun Observatory): You can enjoy seeing varied evening sun through the year. In summer, the evening sunset is absolutely gorgeous contrast with Okhotsk. In winter, white drift ices give off a golden gleam.
  • Puyuni Cape: Puyuni Cape is located on a hill on the way to Shiretoko Five Lakes from Utoro. Visitors climbing to the summit can see the Utoro Coast, Oronko-Rock, and Utoro Port.
  • Furepe Waterfall: The water falls down from a 100m vertical precipice and comes from the snow and rainfall on the Shiretoko Mountain Range. It is nicknamed Otome-no-namida meaning ‘the tears of maiden.’
  • Shiretoko Five Lakes: Shiretoko Five Lakes are situated on a lava plateau surrounded by old-growth forest. The five lakes do not have individual names. They are referred to by number from Lake No.1 to Lake No. 5. There is a walking trail for visitors and wild animals are common viewing occurrence.
  • Kamuiwakka Waterfall: This waterfall is commonly viewed from sightseeing cruise ships. The natural hot spring water from Mt Io flows into the Kamuiwakka River, and then finally falls into the Okhotsk through the innumerable waterfalls.

Shiretoko Pass

Shiretoko Pass is the shortest open-period road in Japan. You can pass through it only from the end of April to the end of October. From the observatory, Kunashiri Island and Mt. Rausu in northern territory can be viewed.

Lake Mashu (20 min)

With a circumference of 20km and an area of 19.6km², Lake Mashu is always near the top of the top 10 tourist spots. There is a submerged volcano in the centre of the lake. On a sunny day, it is one of the clearest lakes in the world and you can see a depth of almost 40 metres. On a cloudy day, it is shrouded in a mist so thick that you often cannot see it. It is said that seeing it clearly on a fine day will bring you luck.

Mt. Io (20 min only during the summer season)

At the top of this 159m mountain you can find Mount Io Shrine, built in honour of Nobuhiro Takeda of the Matsumae clan. From here you can see an amazing view of the sun setting over the Sea of Japan, and in early summer the mountain is covered with red azaleas.

Lake Akan

It is a lake of mystery and beauty, well known for ‘marimo’ – a curious looking species of moss that grows into large green balls and a natural monument that is unique to the lake.

Day3: Shiretoko or Abashiri – Mashu – Akan

Drift ice sightseeing “icebreaking ship Aurora takes you out amid the shocking brilliance” whiteness of the ice that spreads South around the Amur River in midwinter.

Onnetto (only for summer season)
A mysterious lake where the water changes colour in May and at night you can see the stars reflected on its surface. There are no fish, but the lake is surrounded by nature where you can see wild deer, foxes and rabbits.

Ashoro
10 minute break at the largest designated town in Japan and home to some of the largest areas of ancient forest in Hokkaido.

Upon arrival at Obihiro JR Station, leave for Sapporo by train.
